What to look for in a Commander deck box
Capacity, closure, tokens and travel: a practical checklist for storing a 100-card EDH deck, sleeved or double-sleeved.
A Commander deck is the most expensive thing many players carry around. It’s 100 cards, often double-sleeved, and it travels to game night in a backpack. The box it lives in should do four jobs well.
1. Fit a double-sleeved 100-card deck
Most “100+” boxes are measured with single-sleeved cards. Double sleeves add about a third to the thickness of the stack, so a double-sleeved Commander deck needs about 133 single-sleeved spaces. That’s before tokens. See the deck box size guide for the maths.
Check: does the listing say how many double-sleeved cards fit? If it doesn’t, assume about 75% of the headline number.
2. Stay shut in a bag
Friction lids loosen over time. Flip-top boxes can pop open when a bag gets squashed. A strong magnetic closure is the most reliable everyday option. Two magnets hold better than one, especially if the box gets held upside down.
3. Leave room for tokens, not dice
Commander uses a lot of extras: tokens, emblems, a life counter, commander-damage dice. A good Commander box has room for a handful of sleeved tokens next to the deck. Keep dice in their own box or pouch, because loose dice in the same compartment scratch sleeves.
4. Show off the commander
This is a nice-to-have, not a must. A front window lets you see which deck is which at a glance, which matters once you own more than two.
One deck or several?
Most Commander players don’t stop at one deck. Buying boxes in a set is cheaper than buying singles, and it keeps your shelf consistent. A 6-pack in six colours lets you colour-code decks by colour identity, theme or play group. A matching black set looks clean on a shelf, and you tell decks apart by the card in the window. Either way, boxes that stack neatly save shelf space.
Quick checklist
- Rated for 100 double-sleeved cards (≈133 single-sleeved)
- Magnetic or otherwise positive closure
- Room for tokens next to the deck
- A front window, if you own more than a couple of decks
- Boxes that stack, if you store several
